Israeli police said Friday that they suspect arson in the wildfire that has killed at least 41 people and injured 17 in northern Israel over the past two days.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld cited “suspicious objects” found Thursday. He did not elaborate.

Officials called the wildfire, which had scorched more than 7,400 acres and continued to burn, the worst in the nation’s history.

A police investigative team and a fire expert team have been working to determine the cause of the fire, which started from a single location, said Dudi Cohen, Israeli police commissioner.

Deadly blaze in Israel

Forty of the fatalities were cadets in Israel’s prison service who were en route Thursday to help evacuate 500 inmates from Damon prison near Haifa when their bus became engulfed in the fast-moving blaze, the Jerusalem Post reported.

“The bus had no chance; they tried to escape but were burned alive,” a firefighter spokesman told the newspaper. “It was a horrific scene.”

Eight funerals were held Friday and several bodies were still being identified, the Jerusalem Post reported.

Israeli firefighter spokesman Yoram Levy said shifting 29 kph (18 mph) winds made the inferno harder to control as flames neared a neighborhood in Haifa, a major tourist destination on the northern coast.

Built on the slopes of Mount Carmel about 50 miles north of Tel Aviv, Haifa’s metropolitan area is also host to historical sites that date to Biblical times.

More than 15,000 people have been evacuated from villages and towns in the area, emergency officials said.

The fire has also threatened a sensitive ecological area near the Hai Bar nature reserve. Known as Mount Carmel’s “Little Switzerland,” the reserve is home to a wildlife preservation project that seeks to bring back native species mentioned in the Old Testament.

The fire, which began Thursday morning on Mount Carmel and spread through nearby areas, has triggered an outcry in Israel. Though the nation is known for its military might, it has failed to handle the calamity, according to critics.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged Friday during a Security Cabinet briefing that Israel could not cope with the wildfire alone and thanked the more than 13 nations sending emergency crews and equipment to help douse the blaze.

During a visit to victims in a hospital in Haifa, most of which was blanketed in smoke, Netanyahu said Russian planes were the latest addition to the international force aiding Israel.

Russia’s ITAR-Tass news agency reported that an II-76 plane capable of holding 42 tons of water, an amphibious BE-200 and an Mi-26 transport helicopter also used for fighting fires were scheduled to fly to Israel.

“On the way here, we flew over Carmel, where we heard and saw the Greek aircraft fighting the fire,” Netanyahu said. “I very much appreciate the mobilization of many countries.”

Netanyahu talked Friday with U.S. President Barack Obama, who said in a statement that officials from the two nations have been “in near-constant contact since the fires began.”

Chemicals to suppress the flames — including 45 metric tons of fire retardant and 12,000 liters of foam — will arrive this weekend through the U.S. Agency for International Development, that agency said, with teams of U.S.-based firefighting specialists also on their way.

Additionally, a U.S. military official said that Israel has asked for satellite imagery from the U.S. military, as well as planes to carry water and flame retardants.

Israeli fire crews were also aided by Cyprus, England and Turkey, among others. Relations between Turkey and Israel have been tense since last spring, when Israeli commandos boarded a Turkish ship carrying humanitarian aid for Gaza, killing nine people.

“This is a very blessed step that the prime minister of Turkey has decided to take,” Netanyahu told reporters about Turkey’s help. “I appreciate this much in a time of a humanitarian and ecological crisis. We will find ways to show our appreciation

The National Flag of Turkey

The National Flag of Turkey

Article by flag poles, residential flagpoles, turkey,

I visited Istanbul, considered by some to be the capitol of Turkey (which it is not), some years ago with a group of engineering students, and ever since it has been one of my favorite holiday spots. This beautiful country enjoys a long history and has been flying beautiful flags and banners, including historic flags, from flag poles for years.

Interestingly, the national flag of Turkey is colored red with a white crescent moon as well as a star in the middle of the banner. It is referred to as the “moon star” by inhabitants, but also called “red flag” at times. The national anthem even refers to it as the “red banner.”

As mentioned above, this nation has been around for centuries, if not thousands of years. The national flag, as shown from flag poles in our modern times, has somewhat of a complex history since it is an ancient banner. Interestingly, this flag displays similar symbols as the flag of the so called “Ottoman Empire,” which were officially adopted during the first half of the 19th century, with the so called “Tanzimat reforms.” However, the shape of the flag and colors are different.

At times international flags seem to be very alike, if not completely alike, to other flags of different countries of the world. The Turkish flag resembles flags that are attached to commercial and residential flagpoles in other countries, including Northern Cyprus or the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and State of Kelantan, located on the other side of the world, in Malaysia.

Like other countries, Turkey brought a certain law into effect during the 30-s of the 20th century. Also referred to as the “Turkish Flag Law,” this law has quite a few specifics when it comes to its national banner. For example, the proportions of the flag as well as the shade of the color (RGB) are included. The manner in which the flag is to be flown from flag poles is also said to be detailed.

Porch Swings Make the Perfect Gift

Porch Swings Make the Perfect Gift

Article by MJ Marks

What makes the perfect gift? Wow, what a question. The answer depends on so many things. Who you are shopping for. What your budget allows you to spend. What will the person prefer. Do you want to risk buying something they won’t like. All of these sorts of things go into any decision to buy a gift for someone. I realize that porch swings may not be the perfect gift for just anyone, but they sure are for the right person. Who doesn’t like a porch swing? Right, nobody.

Porch swings hold an allure and a fascinating place in most of our lives. Chances are you probably have memories of at least some time spent somewhere with someone on a porch swing. I know I sure do. I remember a lot of fond memories with my Grandparents on their front porch hanging out on their swing. It wasn’t real fancy or anything. I think it was probably just a simple pine one with chains that were just a little squeaky. But I didn’t care about any of that. All I cared about was spending time there with my Grandma or Grandpa.

If you decide you want to take a look at porch swings with an eye to possibly giving one to someone as a gift, then good on ya. Once you start your search you will be surprised at how many different types there are for you to consider. I know a lot of people prefer swings made out of metal. These are durable and usually have attractively covered fabric seats, or pads. They can rust if left in the weather, but some basic care can usually help you avoid that. A little wd-40 lube or even a fresh coat of paint will keep the metal in pretty good condition.

Others opt for wooden porch swings. These have the appeal that only wood can give. They are warm, can be stained or painted to suit individual taste, are available in a wide range of sizes and styles, and last for years and years with the right care. Some woods are better than others when it comes to lasting out in the weather. Redwood, cedar, cyprus, teak, and others are especially suited for being outdoors because of the natural oils in the wood. Many of these will weather to a handsome natural gray if not stained.

Porch swings made out of recycled materials, plastics, or other man made materials certainly have their place as well. These tend to be ultra stable, require little to no maintenance, and are reasonably priced. The color is molded right in so you don’t have to worry about chips, painting, or rust. You give up the natural feel that wood gives, but for many this is exactly what they want. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy! Just buy it, hang it, use it, and forget about it.

Fortunately, there are porch swings for every taste. It really doesn’t matter what other people think of the one you prefer. As long as you, or the person you are buying for, are happy with it. That’s what matters most. Try a few out and see what you like. Take your lucky gift recipient with you. You might be surprised at what you finally settle on. I like wood swings so I was especially shocked with how comfortable some of the resin porch swings on the market are. Good luck!

3 Important Things I Have Learned About Ayia Napa

3 Important Things I Have Learned About Ayia Napa

Article by Ken Sand

The beach is filled with young women in tiny bikinis displaying their tanned flesh, the music is pumping from the beach bars and the time on my watch is only 11 AM. I am taking my third can of Pepsi from my ice-bag and tell to myself: “This is the good life.”

Ayia Napa is the premier seaside resort of the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. Over 50 hotels and hundreds of restaurants and pubs are located in the former fishing village that became a resort in the 1980s. The majority of the 2.5 million annual tourists who visit Cyprus go to Ayia Napa or the neighbor resorts of Fig Tree Bay and Protaras.

The golden beaches are just one of the reasons for the rise of tourism in Ayia Napa. The other and most important reason for tourism development is the conflict between Cyprus and Turkey which made the seaside 40 km north of Ayia Napa a wasteland occupied by the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus. Suddenly all the tourist development at the beaches in the north had to move south, and Ayia Napa was deemed the best location.

My friends back in the UK often refer to me as Mister Ice Cold Napa. The reason is that I run an ice cream bar in Ayia Napa. I chose to settle in Ayia Napa because it is the most lively holiday resort in Cyprus. When I say “lively”, other people say “drunken and rowdy.” But that’s just the few bar streets in the months of July and August. The rest of the year the resort is pretty pretty quiet. Ayia Napa is also used by pensioners and families with children, so no worries.

Enough of all the general info about Cyprus and the resort. My life as an ice cream bar owner in Ayia Napa has learned me three specific and important things which I want to pass on to you:

1. You only have to be 17 years old to buy beer in Cyprus, hence the Swedish girls populate the place.

The not so strict alcohol laws in Cyprus (compared to rest of Europe) makes it a popular place for teenagers to drink and have fun during the summer. That’s probably why we see so many young Scandinavian people here.
When they come to my ice cream bar, most of them prefer vanilla and lemon ice creams.

2. The Russians are everywhere.

You may not see so many Russians in Ayia Napa, but their money is helping out running several restaurants and night clubs. And a few strip joints as well. If you go to a strip club in Ayia Napa you will always lose more money than you think (Important lesson learned for me).

3. Tired of the music at Nissi Beach? Walk 500 metres and go to Golden Beach.

If you are staying in Napa for 14 days you will get tired of the constant loud music at Nissi, I advise my friends to head over to the neighbour beach of Golden beach for some relaxation in the sand.

About the Author

The ice cream bar owner also runs a honest Ayia Napa travel guide which shows you all the little dirty secrets of the resort. He thinks that a vacation in Ayia Napa is money far well more spent than a city break in cities like Istanbul or Tel-Aviv.
